Fall in the North Country is one of the most beautiful things you will ever experience in your life.  The waterfalls, the ciders, and the farms, are amongst some of the best brag-worthy places in all of America.  The majestic views alone make the natives behave like tourists during this season.

This part of New York is different from what you see on television.  There are no big city lights, traffic jams, or sideshows. This is Northern New York, where we go apple picking, visit dairy farms, and hike along the most beautiful scenery you’d ever see.

Breath-Taking Waterfalls

  • Niagara Falls State Park in New York is one of the most beautiful and highly desired attractions in America.  You can visit the State Park on the American side or Visit Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. The views are spectacular and the attractions lining the park are nothing short of extravagant.  There are casinos, museums, and more restaurants than you can name! The falls are flowing 365 days a year, but there is so much more fun to be had when the weather is nice!
  • Watkins Glen State Park is a great place to hike and view waterfalls along the way. There are almost 20 waterfalls in the Park.  This is a great place to go alone, on a date, or with children. The natural beauty of the park is enhanced by the glistening waterfalls and the sound of them crushing against the boulders.
  • Salmon Run Falls is best seen during the Fall season, but you can visit the falls year-round.  It is a serene park with lots of opportunities for hiking in the fall or ice climbing in the winter. But be careful the falls can be dangerous and the ice unpredictable.

Farms

  • Visiting the farms to pick pumpkins, or apples is something that is always fun and exciting for families in Fall. Old MacDonald Farm is a favorite for many people in the North Country.  They have Dairy Tours, Pony Rides and a Corn Maze.
  • Appledale Orchards has some of the freshest fruit around! You can pick your own fruit there! The children have a blast and they are well tired out after all the work they’ve done!
  • Masseys Ranch is another popular Farm.  The make pure Maple Syrup and other maple products. If you want it fresh there are only a hand full of places that make pure Maple Syrup, this is one of the best.

Wineries

If you love a good glass of wine, don’t look any further.  Northern New York has the best and most beautiful wineries in the region. These places are arguably the top wineries to visit in the area.

  • Coyote Moon Vineyards was named one of the best tourist destinations in the state! You can take a wine cruise, visit the winery, or attend a tasting right off the 1000 Islands.  The views are incomparable to anything I’ve ever seen!
  • Tug Hill Vineyards is another popular place to tour in the North Country.  They offer event rooms and winery tours for your entire party. It is a family owned farm where you can always pick your own produce. It’s worth the drive to Lowville to taste their award-winning wines.

Cider in the North Country

  • The Burrville Cider Mill is hands down, the place to go when you want to satisfy your cider cravings.  They have fresh apple ciders, cider donuts, candied apples, and so much more! Can you smell the fresh pressed apples? The photo ops are comparable to none.  This place is one of the oldest in Jefferson County and the history behind it is captivating! You must visit the Cider Mill before winter!

My All-Time Favorite

  • The best adventure to be had this time of year is to visit the 1000 Islands and Boldt Castle! If you have never been to Alexandria Bay, New York, you are missing out my friend.  The views, the water, the food, it’s more than I can verbalize in this article. You are just going to have to trust me and get out there. There are boat cruises offered daily, castle tours, and the freshest seafood you’ve ever tasted. The atmosphere is inviting and open, yet it still has that small-town feel.

You must check out all these places before old man winter arrives.  There are so many things to do and see here in the North Country and photos will not do it justice.  Until you feel the mist of Niagara Falls, or taste a fresh cider doughnut, you’ve never lived. Enjoy the season before it’s too late!
